Themes for 2008…
Usually I will post on a Friday, trades made if any for the week just gone and any commentary or thoughts on the state of the markets that are being traded. For those of you not in the UK you can see some comments and follow up on some of the ticker symbols with www.stockcharts.com to see how the price action pans out.
I focus on the main US index S&P 500 ($SPX); Gold; Gold Shares in the Gold Bugs index ($HUI); Silver and sometimes individual shares if opportunities present themselves. Sometimes I will trade the grains and coffee which I have been following closely for 3 years now… waiting for the big move or spike that will inevitably hit this market on a crop failure… this coming year (2008)? or the next?
ABOUT SPREAD TRADING
Spread trading is something limited to the UK – it means basically trading on margin – no shares or contracts are actually made, you are betting against the ‘house’ which will be the spread trading company you have an account with. Most smaller traders lose eventually… it is a highly leveraged game but one that with discipline can teach you how to trade well.
Spread trading is similar to the ‘bucket shops’ that were around at the start of the last century – they allowed punters to put down 10% on margin and bet on the movement of stocks.
It is tax-free in the UK – no stamp duty, capital gains or tax of any kind. It is treated under the gaming rules… but we will be treating it as a speculation, just like any share purchase – that is assuming you want to profit?
The blog is inspired by various people, alive and dead – Jim Rogers among them.
